STYRES EXTENDS POINTS LEAD WITH WIN AT BRIGHTON

By Clayton Johns

BRIGHTON – The pit area saw 21 sprint cars sign in for action at Brighton Speedway on Rapid Rad and Star 93.3 night, featuring the Southern Ontario Sprints (SOS) on Saturday. The SOS made their fourth appearance at Brighton this season for a 25-lap feature.

Brad Lodge (No.2 RBM Carriers) and Mitch Brown (No.10b Pro-Fit Health Club) led the 21-car Southern Ontario Sprints field to the green. Brown grabbed the early lead with fourth-place starter Glenn Styres (No.0 Case IH) jumping to the second spot on the first lap.

The top two quickly broke away from the field and diced there way through lapped traffic as early as lap four. Styres cut in to Brown’s lead when a group of lapped cars made it difficult for Brown to run his preferred line against the cushion. On lap 12, Brown saw his opportunity for a fourth consecutive win at Brighton disappear when something broke in the car’s front end, damaging the steering. The damage ended Brown’s race, giving the lead to Styres.

Styres led the final 13 laps of the race, holding off challenges from defending champion Chris Jones (No.11J Jones Automotive). Styres appeared to have the victory sewn up before a caution at lap 23 slowed the field for a spinning Keith Dempster (No.5 Renway Energy) on the backstretch.

Jones and third-place runner Warren Mahoney (No.25 RBM Carriers) could not mount any serious challenge in the final two laps as Styres earned his first victory of the year at Brighton. Jones finished second while Mahoney held on to third ahead of Jamie Turner (No.11T Hank’s Discount Smokes) and Charlie Sandercock (No.57 Bellevue Fabricating).  Turner, Brown, and Styres won the Wiseco Pistons qualifying heats.
